Caribbean colonization and power that comes with it The Caribbean use to be a place of mystery during the time of William Shakespeare. Now, we know that it is a place that has suffered through terrible times. Jamaica is the center of our study; they have suffered through slavery and being abandoned by Great Britain. Through the stories that we read in class I saw the theme of power show up in the text. The mystery of the Caribbean was enough to make Shakespeare choose it for his final play The Tempest a story about power and how easy it is achieved and lost. Power is like control this is what makes it such a trick subject since it is always shifting and everyone thinks they have it but you know when you don’t have it. It also gives the IMF the power to make sure that Jamaica’s economy cannot recover and grow. American corporation use â€Å"Free zone† this is a place that embodies a sweat shop. These corporations use the Caribbean because there are no laws against the way they treat the employs and there are no union to help the employs get what they deserve. In the video of â€Å"Life in Debt† it is said the average â€Å"two-week wage is thirty dollars† (0:53:00) This is not the American dollar the employs get paid but instead they are paid in the Jamaica currency. Early in the video we found out that â€Å"exchange rate is huge the American dollar but can only by little with the exchange given† (0:04:00). The power that and American driver’s license carries when entering Jamaica is second to none. When a Jamaican citizen want to travel to America they travel with â€Å"card board boxes carrying supply that are needed for relatives.† (0:03:00) While Americans can breeze through customs with no problem. The power that is present that customs scrutinize a citizen when trying to get into their home country but yet a foreigner can waltz right in with no problems.
